On both sides of the city, high mountain ranges line the valley. Occasionally, there may be avalanches in the winter, but not near the populated areas.

The western range has a long, sharp ridge, which has given the town its name. It is also this mountain, which is rich in iron ore, which for a long time was the basis of the economy of the city.

The eastern range is less steep and has a recently built ski resort.
