The river Serpentine flows through the valley, where a dam has created a lake. In the mining days, timber was cut down in the forests and sent down the river to an old sawmill, powered by the dam.

Strangely, even though the lake and river should be perfect for fish, no fish lives there. Even attempts to introduce fish there have failed.

The name of the river is thought to be a translation of the old Indian name. The lake has no official name and is officially considered part of the river, but it is usually called 'The serpents egg' or 'The bulge'.
